송지연 작가의 이번 전시는 2012년에 이은 JJ 중정 갤러리에서의 두번째 개인전이다. 그동안 작가는 본인의 색깔을 유지하며 꾸준히 작업을 이어왔고 많은 미술애호가들의 주목을 받고 있다. 우리에게 익숙한 도시의 풍경들을 두툼한 물감의 느낌으로 이야기하는 작가의 작품은 우리의 공간을 친숙하게 보여주고 새롭게 느끼게 해준다.

도시에서 태어나 어린 시절을 보낸 작가는 계속해서 바뀌어 가는 주변의 모습을 접했다. 높은 빌딩과 아파트, 숲, 빼곡히 모여 있는 건물들을 통해 생활의 편리함을 중심으로 살고 있는 인공적인 모습들이 그녀에게는 또 다른 자연 풍경으로 비쳤고, 그런 모습들을 긍정적으로 받아들이며 변해가는 외부 환경으로부터 ‘나’라는 존재를 잃지 않되 무한한 일상 속에서 어떻게 의미 있는 삶을 보낼지에 대해 고민하며 그가 자주 가는 길 혹은 지나갔던 길을 그리기, 지우기를 반복한 작업을 통하여 자신의 흔적들을 찾아가고자 한다. 보는 이들로 하여금 자칫 삭막해 보일 수 있는 풍경들을 담담한 시선으로 바라보게 하고, 또 그러한 풍경들을 받아들일 수 있도록 만들어 주고 있다. 그의 작품 속에서 나의 공간을 찾아보길 바란다.

 

 

나의 작업은 ‘나’를 찾는 일에서 시작한다. 어린 시절의 ‘나’와 현재의 ‘나’는 같지 않고 미래의 ‘나’는 어떻게 변할지 알 수 없다.

왜냐하면 ‘나’라는 사람은 일정하게 고정되어 있지 않고, 항시 변동하고 발전하는 주변의 환경과 연령에 따라 바뀌는 사회적 역할에 따라서 달라지기 때문이다. 그래서 나는 ‘나’를 찾는 일을 내 안에서가 아닌 나를 둘러싸고 있는 외부적인 환경에서 찾고 있는 것이다. 즉 내가 살고 있는 일상적이고 낯익은 삶의 풍경을 끊임없이 바라보면서 ‘나’라는 존재를 알고자 한다. 이는 역사적으로, 그 시대의 사람을 말할 때 역사적 배경과 사회적 환경을 전제로 유추하여 말하는 것과 같은 방법이며 누구나 자신을 대신 하여 말할 때 다른 대상으로 대변하여 말하는 것과 같은 것이다. 나는 ‘나’라는 존재를 내가 바라보는 풍경 속에서 찾고자 한다.

 

이번 전시에 나타난 이미지들은 내가 주로 지나다니는 길과 내가 지나갔었던 길이다. 우연히 지나간 길속에서 나의 일상을 알게 되고 그곳은 내가 어떤 곳에서 어떻게 살고 있는지 보여준다. 대도시의 헝클어 있는 도로위의 혼잡한 버스와 자동차, 그 도로를 거닐고 있는 사람들, 가로 길과 세로 길이 만나서 생기는 교차길, 산을 넘어 다른 지역으로 가는 언덕길 등이다.

 

복잡하고 혼잡한 도시 속에 살고 있는 나는 나를 둘러싸고 있는 환경을 객관적인 시각으로 보려고 노력하고 있으며 앞으로도 ‘나’를 찾는 노력은 계속 될 것이다.

This exhibition is artist Song Ji Yeon’s second solo exhibition at JJ Joong Jung Gallery, after the preceding exhibition in 2012. Up to this time, the artist has continued her work, keeping her distinct style and characteristics, and is the center of attention of many art enthusiasts.

Depicting familiar sceneries of the city in thick, bulky brushstrokes, Song’s works portray our whereabouts in an intimate manner while simultaneously also allowing us to identify their new aspects.

Born and raised in the city, the artist was exposed to the continuously changing environment of her surroundings. Artificial settings of towering skyscrapers and apartment buildings centered around convenient life styles struck her as another scenery of nature. Accepting those features in a positive way, Song pondered on how not to lose ‘herself’ within the rapidly developing environment, as well as how to bring value to her life comprised of seemingly finite daily lives. The artist thus aims to track and follow her traces by depicting the roads she normally strolls through as well as the ones she has passed by in the past through the process of ‘painting and erasing’ repeatedly.

Song’s works lead the audience to view the city landscapes which may appear rather bleak and desolate in a serene manner, while also allowing the viewers to accept the sceneries as they are. We encourage you to search for your own space within Song Ji Yeon’s works.

My works originate from searching for what ‘I’ am. I, now, am not same as what I used to be in the past and not sure what I will be in the future. Because, I am not stationed in one place, but in several places according to social ranks that changes by the environment and age. As a result, I discover myself in the external space, not in me, myself.

That is, I try to find out what ‘I’ am while watching the surroundings that is familiar with my life. This reflects that we talk about a historical figure judging from his or her historical and social environment and we represent ourselves as certain objects. I am looking out for what ‘I’ am in my daily life.

 

Images in my exhibition show two types of roads; one I follow very often and the other I followed.

I come to realize my daily life from the roads I happen to face, where my life is open to the viewers; buses and cars which are bumper to bumper, people strolling along the crowded roads, intersections, roads on the hillside, and so on.

 

I, who live in a hectic city, am making efforts to view the circumstances around me in an objective way and the journey into my world will remain in progress.
