이번 전시 기획의 시작은 선이다. 처음부터 구체적 계획으로 형상을 그려 놓고 채워가는 작업이 아니라 선 그리기에서 시작된 의도치 않은 과정이 결국 작가의 의도로 귀결되는 과정에 관심을 두었다. 결과를 예상하고 그리는 것이 아니라 그리다 보면 결국 무엇인가 되어 있는 것, 노동집약적인 선 그리기에 감성을 불어넣어, 그리는 과정에서 작가의 의도가 발현되는 작품에 주목했다. 명확한 전체를 추구하는 대신 과정에서 그림이 완성되며 이 과정에서 작가의 감성이 집약적으로 구현되는 작품들이다.

참여 작가는 김홍주, 박진규, 이배, 석파(石坡) 이하응, 최영욱이다.

김홍주 작가의 ‘Untitled’는 노동집약적인 선그리기 표현으로, 우연성과 감수성으로 완성된 작품이다.

박진규 작가의 ‘Untitled’는 캔버스 위에 구축한 건축물과 같다. 2차원적 평면 위에 세워진 3차원적 구조는 캔버스를 가로지르는 세심하고 체계적인 페인트 선들로 구성되어 매우 독특한 공간감을 만들어 낸다.

이배 작가의 ‘드로잉(Drawing)’ 은 서예에 가까운 노력이라 말할 수 있다. 붓의 획으로 구성한 현대미술이다.

이하응의 ‘난’은 선의 백미를 보여준다. 일필휘지는 미리 계획한 바로는 그릴 수 없을 것이다. 순간의 감각으로 본능적으로 갈 방향을 잡고 만들어 갔을 것이다. 필획의 구성은 사전에 완벽히 구상되어 있다기 보단 순간적인 판단이다.

최영욱 작가의 ‘카르마’는 선에 의미가 있다. 끊기고 이어지는 무수한 선들은 만나고 헤어지고 다시 만나는 우리의 인생길, 연(緣)을 표현한다. 그 선은 작가의 작업 과정에서 자연스럽게 어딘가로 이어진다. 우리의 인생과 닮았다.



This curatorial project begins with the concept of 'line.' The unintended process which stems from the act of line-drawing and eventually results in the artist's intended message, rather than initially portraying an object and then filling it in with a specific arrangement or plan, is the underlying interest of the discourse. The exhibition focuses on artworks which reveal the artists' intentions throughout the process of their creation; instead of anticipating the outcome from the start, the laborous and repetitive method of line-drawing is imbued with the artists' sensibility. Instead of pursuing a definite whole, the artworks are completed within the process in which the artists' sensitivity is intensively embodied.

Participating artists are Kim Hong Ju, Park Jin Kyu, Lee Bae, "Seokpa" Lee Ha Eung, and Choi Young Wook.

Kim Hong Ju's "Untitled" is an expression of labor-intensive line drawing, completed with coincidence and sensitivity.

Park Jin Kyu's "Untitled" is like an architecture constructed on canvas. His three-dimensional structure on a two-dimensional plane is composed of meticulous and orderly lines of paint that transect both horizontally and vertically across the canvas to create a very unique sense of space.

Lee Bae's "Drawing" can be described as an effort close to calligraphy. It is a contemporary art composed of calligraphic brush strokes.

Lee Ha Eung's "Nan(Orchid)" demonstrates the highlight of the line. Commencing with one stroke of the brush could not have been carried out with a pre-determined plan. He would have instinctively set the direction of the brush stroke at each moment. The composition of the strokes is not perfectly conceived in advance, but rather a momentary yet decisive judgment.

Choi Young Wook's "Karma" holds meaning in the lines drawn on the surface of the moonjar. The lines represent the diverse paths in life; they depart at one point yet seem to meet again elsewhere, similar to human relationships. They are naturally connected and led to somewhere throughout the work process. They resemble our lives.
