예술은 현실을 반영함과 동시에 이상향을 드러내는 수단이기도 하다. 그렇기에 예술은 우리가 살아 숨 쉬는 현재뿐만 아니라 경험하지 못한 과거와 경험하지 않은 미래를 담곤 한다. <Reflection>은 김승영, 최준근 작가가 스스로를 투영한 작품을 통해 간접적으로 작가의 시간과 철학을 느낄 수 있는 자리를 마련한다.

김승영(b.1963) 작가의 설치작품은 가을날의 공기를 떠올리게 한다.‘쓸다’라는 제목을 가진 두 개의 설치, 영상 작업에서 들리는 새벽녘 스님의 비질 소리와 사각거리는 종이 소리가 더욱 그렇다. 지금껏 만난 인연들의 이름을 크레딧 형식으로 보여주는‘기억’, 자연석을 조각하여 파동하는 감정을 시각화한 ‘항해’ 역시 쓸쓸하지만 희망적이다. 작가는 이처럼 구체적인 기억과 경험 그로 인해 파생된 감정을 작품에 직접적이고 적극적으로 반영한다. 그 수단으로써 사용된 공간은 삶의 자취를 시각적으로 감각하여 각성할 수 있는 토대로서 작용한다.
최준근(b.1963) 작가는 흰 바탕에 제주도의 검은 현무암이 무심히 자리 잡힌 풍경을 탄생시킨다. 한 붓씩 먹 층을 쌓아 올리는 시간이 축적될수록 작가의 감정과 상념이 작품에 반영되어 그야말로 공(空)간의 서사를 만들어낸다. 특히 이번 전시의‘Sea’시리즈는 작품 속 돌들이 머무는 표면에 흔들리듯 반영된 상을 통해 시간성을 더욱 강조했다는 점을 알 수 있다. 최준근의 작품 속을 여유롭게 거니는 동안은 켜켜이 쌓인 기억들을 되짚어보며 스스로의 내면에만 오롯이 집중할 수 있는 시간이 될 것이다.

두 작가의 작품은 형식의 교집합이 크지 않지만 결론적으로 명상적 체험을 제공하며, 정서적인 교감을 다룬다는 유사점을 가지고 있다. <Reflection>에서 다른 듯 같은 두 작가를 한자리에서 만남으로써 고유한 경험을 재 사유하고 더 나아가 확장하고 치환할 수 있는 차원을 마주할 수 있길 바란다.



Art is a means of reflecting reality while also revealing an ideal realm. Therefore, art encompasses not only the present, in which we live and breathe but also unexperienced past and uncharted future. Through the artworks that reflect themselves, artists Seungyoung Kim and Junkun Choi provide an opportunity to indirectly experience the artist's time and philosophy.

Seungyoung Kim(b.1963)'s installation artwork evokes the air of autumn. The sound of the early morning sweeping by a monk and the rustling of paper in two installations and video works titled ‘Sweeping’ are even more pronounced. ‘Memory' displays the names of the people I've met so far in a credit-style format, and 'Voyage' visualizes emotions by sculpting natural stone into waves. Both are melancholic yet hopeful. make it even more so. He actively and directly incorporates concrete memories and emotions derived from his experiences into the artwork. The exhibition space also serves as a means of visual perception and acts as a catalyst for awakening.
Junkun Choi(b.1963) creates a landscape where the black basalt of Jeju Island is peacefully placed on a white background. As time accumulates in the process of layering one stroke at a time, the artist's emotions and contemplation are reflected in the artwork, creating a narrative of the space, truly making it a story of emptiness(空). In particular, the 'Sea' series in this exhibition emphasizes temporality by portraying the stones in the works as if they were swaying and reflecting on the surface where they reside. As you leisurely stroll through Choi Jun-geun's works, it will be a time to revisit the accumulated memories and focus solely on your inner self.

Although the formal intersection of the two artists' works is not pronounced, they both ultimately provide a meditative experience and convey emotional resonance. I hope you can explore and exchange unique experiences at this exhibition.
